In 2005 The Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa brought back into print after a twenty-year lapse eleven titles by their former official ethnographer, Elsdon Best. It is difficult to think of another New Zealand writer of his period who today might be accorded such a vote of confidence. Eleven scholarly non-fiction titles devoted to traditional Māori culture, written before 1930, arriving in a crowded marketplace at the beginning of a new millennium: what persuaded Te Papa to take such a commercial risk?
