Abstract

Looks at the significance of changing the name of conflicts over time which in reflect the changing interpretations of the conflicts. The author focuses on the New Zealand Wars of the 19th century and its various labels over time.

Author Biography

Danny Keenan

Danny Keenan lectures in nineteenth century Maori and New Zealand history at Massey University, Palmerston North. From a public service background, he earlier worked for the Department of Maori Affairs. His research interests include New Zealand race relations, Taranaki tribal history, Maori customary law and comparative native histories. He is a member of Te Pouhere Korero (Maori historians).
