Lessons from the Dodo

In 1879, Auckland Institute and Museum received as a gift for its fledgling collections a photograph of a dodo fossil (see Figure 1). In the same manuscript file in which this image is archived, the Institute and Museum—now known as Auckland War Memorial Museum—also holds a letter dated 11 April 1879 and addressed to a single recipient, Judge Gillies.
