The Lowe Family: Five Generations of Dance Teachers in New Zealand, Australia and Scotland

Abstract

The history of the Lowe family spans nearly 200 years of dance teaching. In this remarkable chronicle more than 20 named individuals (often assisted by wives and children) were active, first in many centres in Scotland, later moving to Melbourne, Australia, and Canada -where their work has not yet been documented-and New Zealand, settling in Dunedin, Christchurch, and finally Wellington.

Author Biography

Allan Thomas, Victoria University of Wellington

Allan Thomas is an ethnomusicologist specializing in Pacific Island and Asian musics in the School of Music, Victoria University of Wellington. He has written on 19th century music in New Zealand, and having edited the Journal of Joseph Lowe is engaged in research into the Lowe family in New Zealand.
