Concurrent Narratives of Maori and Integration in the 1950s and 60s

Abstract

Maori and government policies of integration in the 1950s and 60s by accessing two concurrent narratives are discussed. The two narratives are the narrative of the state embedded in a one-size-fits-all Maori policy, and the narratives of the Maori 'business of life'.

Author Biography

Aroha Harris

Dr Aroha Harris belongs to Te Rarawa and Ngapuhi. She is a lecturer in history at the University of Auckland and was recently appointed to the Waitangi Tribunal. Her current research interests include Maori policy in the 20th century, Maori and indigenous North American societies and cultures since 1945, and Maori life histories and oral sources.
