The relationship between paid work and personal relationships operates in both directions, and can be both positive and negative. These interactions and outcomes have implications f or society and political economy as well as for individuals and employers. This paper explores the issues through findings from an online survey in New Zealand, together with interviews with New Zealand relationship counsellors, analysis of existing statistics, and a review of previous research internationally. It concludes with recommendations for workplace initiatives to enhance the benefits of personal relationships and minimise the negative impacts.
