Family Photos and Memories: A Personal Reflection

Abstract

This article relates how the author's mother moved to Titahi Bay as a child with her family when it was being set up as one of Wellington's first government state housing settlements (in the 1950's). The author describes how her mother kept a large collection of photographs recording events in the lives of family, friends and neighbours during that time and which were retrieved generally at the time of a reunion to reminisce. Finally the article discusses the function of the photographs for people who are subjects in the photos and those who are not.

Author Biography

Shanann Carr, Archives New Zealand

Shanann Carr is an Archives Advisor in the Recordkeeping Capability team at Archives New Zealand. Previously she has been an Archivist at the Wellington City Council, and has also spent time as Curator of Archives at the North Otago Museum in Oamaru. In her current role Shanann specialises in advice for the archives sector, and looks after The Community Archive website. She is very passionate about community archives and a large part of her role at Archives New Zealand involves liaising with community groups about the appropriate management of their archives collections.
