Abstract

This article describes the relationship between the Society of Mary (Marists) and Māori. It describes early Marist missions,  archival resources and prominent figures in this relationship.

Author Biography

Ken Scadden

Ken Scadden studied at Victoria University to B.A. Honours Level. Later, he attended the University of New South Wales and obtained the Diploma of Information Management-Archives Administration. He joined National Archives and served as Cartographic Archivist (briefly!), Reference Archivist and Assistant Director Wellington, then became Archivist/ Curator, then Director of the Wellington Maritime Museum. As Museum Director he was responsible for its transformation into the Museum of Wellington City and Sea. He then ran his own consultancy company, Heritage Advisory Services providing assistance to both archives and museums. Currently he is Archives Manager for the Marist Archives in Wellington.
