Abstract

This paper is a reworked version of a talk originally given within the ‘Identity’ theme at the ICA Congress in Brisbane in August, 2012 and then re-presented at the ARANZ conference ‘Inside and Outside the Box’ in Wellington in October, 2012. In that talk, we used a case study to discuss how the Alexander Turnbull Library has developed and implemented tools to enhance archival descriptive practice relating to Māori materials. This paper contains substantially the same information, but has been reordered and updated for publication, while still retaining the presentation dynamics as we have indicated our respective contributions.

Author Biographies

Ariana Tikao, Alexander Turnbull Library

Ariana Tikao (Kāi Tahu) is the Research Librarian, Māori at the Alexander Turnbull Library in the Arrangement & Description team. She comes from a background in the heritage, education and library sectors. Her role at the Turnbull focusses on making the Turnbull’s vast Māori collections more accessible and findable through improved levels of description. Ariana is known as a Māori musician who is passionate about reviving her whānau (family) and tribe’s waiata (song) culture which she endeavours to bring back to life through research, recording and performance.

Nicola Frean, Alexander Turnbull Library

Nicola Frean (MA Hons, DipLibr) is the foundation Leader, Arrangement and Description, at the Alexander Turnbull Library, National Library of New Zealand Te Puna Mātauranga o Aotearoa. She has been in this role for two years, following experience in academic, community, and co-operative archival organisations. She helped to start the ARANZ Collecting Archives SIG, and is a previous Editor of Archifacts. She loves to see elegant, connected, incremental finding aids being used, and is particularly proud of her A&D for the NZTronix software archive. She is affiliated, through marriage, to Te Rarawa.
