Abstract

Small community archives often fly under the radar when archival issues are discussed. This article briefly examines some aspects relating to access and community archives, particularly regarding two areas: how concepts and conditions of access are affected by the working environment, and what the archives and heritage information professions can do to support the better management of access in the future.

Sarah Welland, Open Polytechnic of New Zealand

Sarah Welland is a lecturer in Information and Library Studies, Open Polytechnic of New Zealand, and a consultant specialising in government recordkeeping. She has extensive knowledge of and experience in the records, archives and information management industries, and manages her community’s local history collection on a volunteer basis.
