Abstract

This article covers some of the questions the author has faced using mental health records from the Seacliff Asylum archive, Dunedin since first working on research in the 1980s. It discusses access denial, issues of harm, and the privacy of patients.

Author Biography

Barbara Brookes

Barbara Brookes is Professor of History at the University of Otago. Her research and publications lie at the intersections between the history of women and the history of medicine. In 2001 she edited, together with Jane Thomson, 'Unfortunate Folk' Essays on Mental Health Treatment; 1863-1992 (Otago University Press, 2001). Her most recent volume, coedited with Tracy Penny Light and Wendy Mitchinson is Bodily Subjects: Essays on Gender and Health 1800-2000 (McGill-Queens University Press, 2014). She is completing a History of Women in New Zealand, due to appear late 2015.
