Abstract

The article briefly describes a project started in 2017 to digitise the early survey maps (ca. 1850-ca.1880) of the Canterbury Land District. It comments on the organisations contributing to the project, notes the difficulty photographing the large roll maps, and the importance of using GIS technology to allow some organisations to overlay historical topographical data onto their own geospatial platforms. It also describes where the maps can be accessed and notes that the roll maps from Westland, Nelson, Marlborough, Otago and Southland land districts have been added to the project.
