Abstract

This article traces the story behind the author's archiving of the full collection of materials relating to the Wellington-based fashion brand Starfish (1993-2013), created by designer Laurie Foon. The article describes the contents of the Starfish Laurie Foon collection, held at the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa. The article includes an interview with Foon, outlining her background and vision for sustainable clothing. The demise of middle-range clothing boutiques is also discussed.

Author Biography

Gareth Watkins, Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa

Gareth Watkins has held a variety of roles within the heritage and broadcast sectors. He is an award-winning public radio documentary maker. He curated the national radio and sound collection at Ngā Taonga Sound & Vision and more recently was assistant archivist to Jennifer Twist at Te Papa. Gareth currently works in a support role at the Awhina Centre – New Zealand AIDS Foundation.
