Abstract

This article provides an overview of the history of the Havelock North Library Community Archives and its collections. The Archives collection consists of several individual collections from early Havelock North history, miscellaneous ephemera, family histories, a large photographic collection, war memorabilia, and selected Hawke’s Bay newspapers. This article focuses on the Dr Felkin and Stella Matutina Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn Collection. The article dscribes the history of the Order in New Zealand which began with the work of Reginald Gardiner, his Havelock Work group, and his publication 'The Forerunner'. A list is provided of the items in the Felkin collection, which includes a full printed set of 'The Forerunner'.

Author Biography

Kim Salamonson, Havelock North Library (Hastings District Libraries)

Kim Salamonson has worked in Libraries for 32 years. He has been the Local History Librarian at Havelock North Library, which is part of Hastings District Libraries, for 21 years. In this role, Kim looks after a purpose-built archives facility, answers local history queries, and promotes the archives. He is well known within the Havelock North community, as he has written many articles for the local community newspaper and is himself an avid collector for the local archives. He is a member of the Landmarks group, Historic Places Trust and Duart Historical Society. Alongside history, Kim is also interested in programming and technology.
