Abstract

This obituary pays tribute to archivist and historical fiction author Ray Grover who died aged 88. Lists his professional accomplishments which include his distinguished career as a librarian, first director of the then National Archives of New Zealand and then Chief Archivist. Touches on his oeuvre of writing which spanned topics of capital punishment to the impact of war on ordinary people.

Author Biography

Brad Patterson

Brad Patterson is an Adjunct Research Fellow at the Stout Research Centre for New Zealand Studies, Victoria University of Wellington. Formerly Director of the university’s Irish-Scottish Studies Programme, his current research interests include migration studies and the political economy of settler capitalism. His most recent book (edited with Richard Hill and Kathryn Patterson) is After the Treaty: The Settler
State, Race Relations and the Exercise of Power in Colonial New Zealand (2016). He was a founding member of ARANZ and is an Honorary Life Member.
